5 of the UK’s best Christmas markets to enjoy this festive season

A Christmas market is perfect for bringing some festive cheer in the run-up to the big day.

The seasonal tradition started in Germany in the late Middle Ages, and the oldest one on record was held in Dresden in 1432. Over the centuries, Christmas markets have evolved and are now hugely popular in the UK, with almost every city and large town hosting one every year.

Whether you want to visit a local event or combine it with a long weekend away, here are five Christmas markets worth visiting in the UK.

1. Chester Christmas Market

When: 19 November to 22 December 2025

Local is best, and Chester’s Christmas Market was among the top eight events listed by Which? this year.

Rated for its ease of getting around, parking, and lack of crowds, Chester’s Christmas market will have a relatively modest 80 stalls this year.

With stalls set out around the town’s Victorian Gothic town hall and medieval cathedral, you’ll find everything from scented candles to upcycled cutlery – hundreds of gift ideas from artisans and independent traders alike.

Which? rated it as a peaceful festive day out – it scored high marks for its ease of getting around, parking, and lack of crowds.

2. Liverpool Christmas Market

When: 15 November to 24 December 2025

Against the dramatic backdrop of St George’s Hall, Liverpool’s Christmas Market stalls are designed to resemble magical gingerbread houses and grottos.

According to Which?, if you dislike festive schmaltz, Liverpool could be your top choice. In place of carols, artisan crafts, and mince pies, you can enjoy 80s Christmas pop, fairground rides, and down-to-earth menus – think roast ham baps and mac and cheese.

Alongside a charming vintage carousel, you’ll also find a giant Ferris wheel and a thrilling snow slide. Plus, the vibrant Santa Land adds to the festive cheer.

There are also bars to suit every taste. Whether you prefer traditional hot cider, mulled wine, beer, or a toasty hot chocolate, there’s something for everyone.

3. York Christmas Market

When: Thursday 13 November to Sunday 21 December 2025

York is the perfect place to visit if you want to experience a beautiful Christmas market. The Shambles – one of the best-preserved medieval shopping centres in Europe – is a tourist hotspot, featuring independent shops packed with gift ideas.

During the festive period, alpine chalets line Parliament Street and Saint Sampson’s Square selling a magical array of local crafts, artisan products, and delicious seasonal treats.

Better still, more than 80% of stalls are hosted by local Yorkshire traders.

Book a room at the inn: The Grand, an award-winning five-star hotel in the heart of York, promises to welcome you with warmth and charm, providing true Yorkshire hospitality.

4. Victorian Christmas Market, Stratford-upon-Avon

When:

  • Saturday 29 November to Sunday 30 November
  • Saturday 6 December to Sunday 7 December 2025.

For two weekends only, the historic streets of Stratford-upon-Avon will transform into a festive wonderland.

The award-winning themed event features traditional stalls, with vendors in Victorian costumes for some extra magic.

Entertainment is wide and varied. This year, performers will be dotted throughout the markets, so you can enjoy the magic of the unexpected while exploring the stalls.

Indulge your taste buds with a wide array of festive food and drinks. From roasted chestnuts to traditional mulled wine and cider, the flavours of Christmas will tantalise your senses.

While it only opens on two weekends, the Victorian Christmas market in Stratford-upon-Avon is worth fitting into your schedule. If you’re fully committed to exploring multiple Christmas markets, you could start here and then move on to Birmingham – an hour south of Shakespeare’s place of birth.

Book a room at the inn: Studley Castle, a Grade II listed castle, could be the perfect pit stop for your Christmas market tour. The country hotel is located at the ideal halfway point between Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham city centre.

5. Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market

When: Saturday 1 November to Wednesday 24 December 2025

Every year, Birmingham hosts one of the largest German Christmas markets outside of Germany and Austria. It’s so popular, visitors travel to the UK’s second city from far and wide.

The stalls start in Victoria Square and run along New Street, so allow yourself plenty of time to explore everything.

Whether you’re looking for jewellery as a gift or handcrafted decorations for your home, there’s something for everyone.

Of course, there’s plenty to tantalise your taste buds too, including German bratwursts, schnitzels, and roasted almonds.

As well as stalls, there’s a full programme of live entertainment, including local choirs and music groups. Plus, visitors can enjoy a German house band, which performs live on stage every lunchtime and evenings during the working week, as well as Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Check out what’s on when you’re planning your trip to make the most of the entertainment.

Book a room at the inn: Hotel du Vin is within easy walking distance of the Christmas market and offers luxurious accommodation to lay down your weary head after all the festive shopping (and mulled wine).
