KBA company news – here’s your latest update from the KBA team

Every month, we share some highlights of what’s been happening in and around KBA.

This month, we catch up with KBA veteran, David Parkinson, who’s been on the team and looking after clients’ financial planning needs for 23 years. Matt Marsh is also in celebration mode after passing a professional qualification. Plus, find out how we helped Santa deliver more gifts to local children this Christmas.

David Parkinson celebrated his 23-year work anniversary

David has been part of the KBA family since 2000. Through recessions, pandemics, tears, and joy, David has supported clients with his significant knowledge, experience, and banter. Not to mention the contribution that he’s made in helping to create the team that we are today.

23 years deserves a big brew and a healthy serving of cake, served up with big dollop of chat. Here are the key highlights:

Before joining KBA: My professional journey began at Prudential, where I served as a Financial Consultant, Sales Manager, and Pension Specialist from 1992 to 1998. Following that, I ventured into Allied Dunbar, where fate introduced me to Ken, the founding figure of KBA.

In the year 2000, the millennium year, I officially became a part of KBA when my practice merged with Ken’s. Prior to my financial career, I spent my formative years working in the family butcher business, which continues to thrive to this day.

Appeal of KBA: The allure of KBA presented itself when I was based at the Bolton office of Allied Dunbar. My practice, then known as the Parkinson-Dandy Partnership, was undergoing changes due to Phil Dandy’s retirement. Chris Smallwood, our branch manager, orchestrated a merger with Ken’s practice, providing me with the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Ken and his team of advisers.

Evolution of my job: The financial services landscape is ever-changing, influenced by legislative shifts, market dynamics, and economic fluctuations. Adapting to these changes has been crucial throughout my career. Being part of KBA means facing these challenges collectively, and I’m grateful for the support and camaraderie within the team.

Best thing about a regular day in the office: Without a doubt, the best part of a regular day in the KBA office is our incredible team. We work hard, but the camaraderie and humour, especially with our Marketing Executive, Emma, make the day enjoyable. A good laugh goes a long way in navigating the intricacies of our work.

Advice for those in the financial services profession: To those considering a career with KBA or in the financial services profession, my advice is to be prepared for hard work and commitment. The role involves assisting not only clients but also colleagues. You’ll receive comprehensive and ongoing training, support, and the opportunity to work alongside seasoned advisers within a well-known and respected brand. At KBA, we’re still a family business focused on caring for families and their finances.

Looking forward to 2024: In 2024, I’m eagerly anticipating a reduction in mortgage interest rates, which will undoubtedly boost our mortgage business as property purchases pick up. Additionally, I hope for global issues to be resolved, leading to a positive stock market rebound. Like many, I’m looking forward to spending more quality time with the team, both within and outside the professional realm. Here’s to a promising and fulfilling year ahead!

Matt Marsh passed his R05 exam in Financial Protection

Matt is a valuable member of our Client Support team, assisting with all and any administrative support including producing all relevant paperwork and following up with providers to retrieve accurate information for our Financial Planners and clients.

While working hard to keep us organised, Matt is also studying for the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and is making great progress. Late last year he got an early Christmas present when he found out that he’d passed the R05 section on financial protection. We sat down with Matt to find out more.

How long have you been working towards this qualification, and did you have to pass other exams to reach this one?

Two months of studying and thankfully I passed it first time. Prior to this I completed my financial R01, R02, and R03 exams.

How are you at exams, generally?

I’m generally okay if I have done the learning and studying. Although knowing that it comes down to a few questions and answers can be quite nerve-wracking.

What was the hardest part of preparing for the exam?

Finding the time to study alongside work and my personal life.

And the easiest?

Repeatedly preparing myself with practice exam papers, which helped me to gain confidence as it felt like it was becoming easier.

Do you have a revision technique that you rely on?

Yes, I tend to read the whole book and then watch videos on any modules I feel less confident on. Once I feel comfortable, I’ll take some practice papers, and focus on the questions I get wrong.

How was the exam?

The exam was quite difficult, but I felt confident leading into it as I felt like I had put the time and effort into the study.

What does it mean for you professionally?

I’m another step closer to my career, and becoming a Financial Planner.

Are you now working towards another qualification, or are you taking a break before diving into your next challenge?

I still have to pass R04 and R06 to gain the diploma.

I did give myself a little break after the passing this exam, but I’ve started the R04 study now, and am hoping to pass this sooner rather than later, so I can progress to R06 and become fully qualified.

We helped Santa deliver more gifts to local children

The whole KBA team got involved when we decided to help Santa support struggling families at Christmas.

Clubbing together, we donated sacks full of new toys to Wood Street Christmas Mission. Thanks to generous supporters, local children from across Manchester and Salford received gifts from Father Christmas, who had plenty of toys and gifts for every child.

Wood Street Mission is a children’s charity helping children and families living on a low income in Manchester and Salford. To find out more about their work, check out their website where you can learn how you can donate or volunteer your time to help.
