You don’t have to travel to any far-flung destinations to enjoy a break, either, as England is filled with fantastic places to explore, from dramatic coastlines to historic villages.

If you’re considering a staycation this year, then you’re certainly not alone. Data from RSM shows that 28% of consumers are planning a long-stay holiday in the UK in 2025, up from 25% in 2024.

With that in mind, continue reading to discover five of the top spots across England to consider for your next trip.

1. The Lake District, Cumbria

Perhaps one of England’s most breathtaking national parks, the Lake District is a UNESCO world heritage site and home to the country’s deepest lake.

Whether you’re an avid hiker, a wildlife lover, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this stunning location certainly offers something for everyone.

For instance, you could take a leisurely boat ride on Windermere, explore the fells on foot or by bike, or even try your hand at kayaking or paddleboarding.

Fans of literature might also revel in a visit to The World of Beatrix Potter, which brings many of the beloved author’s characters to life.

As for accommodation, you could cosy up by the fire at Harebeck Cottage in Seascale. This charming farmhouse is surrounded by breathtaking views of the Southern Fells.

Or, if you’re looking for something somewhat grander, Netherby Hall near Longtown offers a luxurious experience. This Grade II*-listed mansion sits in 36 acres of grounds and features a lush walled garden providing fresh fruit and vegetables for its Michelin-starred sister restaurant, Pentonbridge Inn.

2. Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire

A quaint fishing village tucked away on the North Yorkshire coast, Robin Hood’s Bay is a picturesque and unique location with narrow cobbled streets that lead down to a sandy beach.

The village is surrounded by rugged cliffs on one side and the dramatic North York Moors on the other, making it ideal if you enjoy a mix of coast and countryside.

There’s also plenty to see and do in and around Robin Hood’s Bay. Indeed, you could go beachcombing around the rock pools or take a scenic walk along the Cinder Track – a former railway line that stretches from Whitby to Scarborough.

If you’re a history buff, you might even enjoy a visit to the secluded Boggle Hole, a series of caves where smugglers once stored their ill-gotten goods.

Hotel Victoria could be an incredible option for a stay with stunning views, as it’s perched above the village with spectacular coastal scenery.

3. Broadway, the Cotswolds

Who says you need to travel to New York to visit Broadway? In fact, Broadway in the Cotswolds could leave you similarly impressed.

Known as the “jewel of the Cotswolds”, this charming village is home to several honey-coloured stone buildings, boutique shops, and cosy tearooms.

During a visit, you could explore the area’s history at Broadway Tower, which offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The nearby Snowshill Manor and Garden, a National Trust property, is worth a visit for its collection of treasures, too.

Food lovers will also rejoice during a trip to Broadway, as there is an eclectic mix of both traditional pub lunches and fine dining experiences on offer.

For instance, Russell’s of Broadway serves exquisite British cuisine, while The Broadway Deli could be the ideal place to stock up for a picnic.

If you’re looking for a place to stay, The Lygon Arms is a historic coaching inn offering luxury rooms and even a spa, making an ideal choice for rest and relaxation.

Or, if you prefer self-catering, the Broadway Manor Cottages provide the perfect cosy base for exploring the area at your own pace.

4. Torquay, Devon

If you’re looking for a taste of the Mediterranean but don’t want to leave the UK, then Torquay on the English Riviera could be what you’re looking for.

With its palm-lined promenades, sandy beaches, and picturesque harbour, the seaside town is ideal for a relaxing getaway.

Depending on the time of year you visit, you could soak up the sun on the stunning Meadfoot Beach or during a boat trip along the coast. Even if the weather takes a sudden turn, you could always visit the prehistoric Kents Cavern, with its labyrinth of caves and imposing stalactites and stalagmites.

If you’re a nature lover, you may want to explore Cockington Country Park, a glorious estate with woodlands, gardens, and a charming, thatched village. Alternatively, you could visit Babbacombe Model Village, a quirky attraction that contains tiny replicas of famous landmarks.

During your trip to Torquay, you don’t have to stray far from the lap of luxury, especially if you stay at The Imperial Torquay, a grand hotel with views over the sea.

Even the spacious self-catering apartments at the Muntham Luxury Holiday Apartments allow you to stay in style and are perfect for families or groups.

5. The Peak District, Derbyshire

As England’s first-ever national park, the Peak District is a paradise for walkers, as it has a plethora of scenic trails through rugged moorlands, rolling hills, and dramatic limestone valleys.

You could explore the iconic Monsal Trail, an 8.5-mile hike offers incredible views from the Headstone Viaduct, a triumph of Victorian engineering. If you’re looking for an even greater challenge, it’s worth climbing Mam Tor, which rewards you with amazing panoramic views.

For a more leisurely wander, you could visit Ladybower Reservoir. Make sure you keep an eye out for the woodland birds and mountain hares!

Even if you aren’t one for walking, there are plenty of other activities around the Peak District. Indeed, you could visit Haddon Hall, a beautifully preserved medieval manor house, or try your hand at caving in Speedwell Cavern, where you can take a boat trip through an underground lake.

For a charming place to stay, The Peacock at Rowsley offers fancy accommodation in a historic setting, while The Hut Eyam provides a quirky, yet luxurious, self-catering stay in a restored shepherd’s hut.
